Les Fleurs Du Mal
(Baudelaire)
Les Fleurs du Mal proves that evil can be found amidst beauty, but more than this, it gives hints that evil can be found inside the most beautiful of all things- love. During the journey that Charles Baudelaire makes into the brackish depths of love, he alludes to relationships based on masochism, sadism, parasitic love and idolatry. There is however, a salient reason why Baudelaire?s love poetry does not fall prey to the common flaw of vulgar perversion, for it maintains that most essential ingredient; beauty. This pulchritude is not the ostentatious melody of a lyric poet, nor is it the ludicrous hyperbole of a Petrarchan Adonis, but rather it is a beauty that walks the razor?s edge between lauding love?s throbbing warmth- and slitting that warmth down its wet center. The idea of a parasitic love holds a certain grim fascination, for just as Salome inflamed the minds of the ancient world by proving inconsolable until she had the head of John the Baptist on a plate, the modern world remains transfixed by those who love so viciously that the object of their affection is consumed. Thus Baudelaire?s work remains as relevant as ever to the masses who eagerly devour glossy magazines to watch the demise of the relationships of the rich and famous. It is almost as if a reader is allowed to examine the thought progression of a lover when he reflects that his heart has been destroyed, for as he dwells on the viciousness of the love that he has encountered, he undergoes a strange change. Thus this classic set of poems opens the blackened doorway into the dark world of French symbolist poetry. There is indeed a savage beauty in the willingness of a man to continue his course of love in full awareness of the ruination it will bring and Baudelaire, in perceiving this beauty, shows the downward spiral of his various charicatures of young love to their ultimate desperate conclusions of damnation.
