For the past twenty years or so, women?s magazines have been full of tips on how to reduce or eliminate housework that our grandmothers took great pride in. When our household possessions begin to look worn we ship them off to Goodwill or the trash instead of mending or repairing them (most of us don?t have a clue about how to mend something or even hem up our too-long pants).
And so, in light of our current attitudes toward housekeeping, Cheryl Mendelson?s ?Home Comforts? is especially enlightening and, well, homey. This eight-hundred page tome on how to do everything from make a bed to keep track of your insurance policies gives readers a sense of what a comfortable Home is and how to create it.
Mendelson is a brilliant writer. A brilliant writer is necessary to get you through so much factual material and keep you interested. On top of her writing skills, she is also an excellent researcher. An attorney by trade, Mendelson clearly did her research on this book. Each fact and tip is backed up by experts. Before I read this book I had no idea there were experts on cleaning marble, but, apparently, there are experts on everything under the sun, and Mendelson spoke to most of them.
After reading ?Home Comforts? I think much more carefully about how I treat the objects in my home. I think about the microorganisms living on my kitchen floor, and I take care to thoroughly wash them away. I shop more deliberately, knowing which fabrics will require extra care in the laundry and which will suit my personal needs.
I borrowed this book from the library, but I?m going to buy it for my family?s reference because it?s so all-inclusive and smart. I?ve never read a non-fiction, how-to book with such novel-like absorption before, and that?s really where the book?s appeal is. The book itself feels like home.
