The Da Vinci Code
(Dan Brown)

Publicidade
Have you ever listened to a CD book? The Da Vinci Code was my first introduction into this foray. Living in the Boston area and travelling a few times a month to Maine, my husband and I decided to listen to this new medium in the car to help pass the time.

Having read the book over a year ago and followed up with Angels and Demons, and having read many other books in the interim, I didn't have a super clear memory of the story. As the story began, my husband and I began soon become absorbed into the world of religion, Raiders of the Lost Ark-esque action and drama, and art.

What soon became a riotous joke was the role of the female. Some silly man's voice trying to play the part of Sophie. Don't the large publishing companies have the ability to hire both men and woman for their video tapes? And doesn't anyone proof them to ensure that they don't mispronounce words? Although mispronounciation did not happen often, it just amused me that there seems to be very little quality control in this medium.

We chuckled every time we heard a man pretending to be a sensitive, confused woman. What we finally discovered halfway through the disks was that one man was playing the part of all the characters. It became apparent when he played the voice of the wealthy English aristocrat. His accents for the myriad of characters started to mesh together and showed how his true voice could be altered for many. Is it such a stretch to hire a few people to play out the story for greater affectiveness?

Although the intermittent chuckle was distracting, the book did tell a good yarn. We will still look for other book CD's to listen to in our long travels. Maybe publishing companies will start respecting sight-challenged people and give us a play versus a monologe in the future! Am I alone?
