Schwarzenegger Criticized For Links To Dietery Supplements

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger found himself in the middle of a
political firestorm Thursday after it was revealed that he had accepted
millions of dollars from publishers of fitness magazines in a
consulting deal his critics charged was a conflict of interest.
Schwarenegger, a former Mr. Universe and perhaps the world?s most
famous body builder, signed on with American Media, Inc., which
publishes Flex and Muscle & Fitness magazines shortly before he was
sworn in as governor. The consultancy arrangement was set to give
Schwarzenegger at least $5 million over five years, according to a
filing before the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The magazines receive much of their profit from advertisers of
nutritional supplements. Last year, Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill
seeking to crack down on the use of performance enhancing substances by
high school athletes. Democratic Sen. Jackie Speier, who sponsored the
bill, cried foul and called upon the governor to sever his ties with
the publisher.
?The governor of the State of California makes some important decisions
every day,? Speier said at a news conference. ?Today, he has to make a
decision about a conflict of interest ? his own.?
Rob Stutzman, a spokesman for Schwarzenegger, denied there was any
conflict of interest because the deal was fully disclosed last year
and, in the post of executive editor of the two magazines,
Schwarzenegger would have no ties to the advertisers. Stutzman also
said the governor, famous in Hollywood for his muscular roles in movies
ranging from Conan the Barbarian to The Terminator, has maintained a
relationship with the two magazines for more than three decades.
Schwarzenegger has refused to take his $175,000 annual salary as
governor and California law permits elected officials to keep outside
jobs.
Stutzman added that Schwarzenegger has been a proponent of dietary supplements throughout his days as a body builder
