Yasmin
(Martin Gani)
?Yasmin? is an effort of a Scottish Film maker "Kenny Glenaan" to bring out a story of prejudice and discrimination suffered by British Muslims in the after effects of 9/11. He had previously directed Family Affairs, Gas Attack and Spark in 1997, 2001 and 2003 respectively and his movie "Gas Attack" won several awards. The interesting thing in this movie is that the Director, Producer and Writer are all white while the story focuses on Britain?s Muslim Community who started getting discriminated treatment as second class citizens and serious identity problems arose just after 9/11. ?Yasmin? is a second young generation having dual nationality of Pakistan and Britain, married to her cousin from Pakistan who used her as a tool to get British Nationality. She then falls in love with a white guy who is pretty warm towards her but soon after the collapse of Twin Towers, the bricks of his love towards her also collapsed. The British police started harassing the Muslims and Yasmin was no exception. The friends turned into foes and the white boy friend did not have any clue to support whom. One day, Yasmin?s residence was raided and her husband was arrested. This pushed Yasmin to the edge of full identity crises and she frequently found Bin Laden?s name written on her locker and enquiries in the office where she works. She was openly called the terrorist in the doorways and streets and in just one day she and other Muslims had become terrorists. The story is well-researched, based on actual incidents that have taken place and highlights the woman living in two worlds, with her tradition-found family at home, while working as an ordinary English woman but now confused, if she?ll be able to fit in, and survive as a British National in Britain.
