Prince of Tides is a large, sprawling, epic novel that is powerful, brash, insightful,filled with honesty, and resounding with drama. It provides a detailed and memorable view of the decaying way of life in South Carolina and how it destroys a family.The main character is Tom Wingo, an English teacher and football coach who tries to start a new life, but is haunted by the past, which is filled with violence and abandonment. Henry Wingo is his cruel father who is in the shrimping business, but ultimately a loser when it comes to business. He has always been abusive to his children and wife, but once he tries to make peace with them it is probably too late because of all the tensions that accumulated over the life. His wife is Lily Wingo who is a strong, proud woman who endures her husband?s abuse. Tom also has a brother and sister. His brother is Luke. He is not very bright, but strong and tries to save his town. Tom also has a troubled sister named Savannah. She is a brilliant poet, but is depressed and in agony over his life.During the beginning of the novel Tom seeks Savannah?s psychiatrist named Dr. Lowenstein. Recently Savannah had numerous suicide attempts. Tom tries to uncover the haunting past of Savannah?s life and his own families to uncover the reasons behind their actions. It initially becomes evident how differently Tom and Dr. Lowenstein live. She is from a rich, Jewish, and educated family from New York. Tom is from a poor family in the tidewaters of South Carolina. His family has always been looked down upon and a result he has been ridiculed in school. His father blew the family?s money on bad business and treats them harshly. His mother does little to alleviate their concerns. She does not protect her children from him and defends him almost every chance she gets.Through Tom?s descriptions one gets a very detailed view of the landscape and way of life in South Carolina. Their way of life is decaying as big business and tourism is becoming prevalent. Eventually the government wants to take their property for their purpose. Luke fights for his homeland and leads the resistance. He puts up a brave fight and eventually loses his fight.While talking to Dr. Lowenstein Tom notices how her life is not happy as well. Her husband is a famous violinist, who seems to be difficult to communicate with and distancing himself from her. She does not like how he treats her son. He pressures him to become a violinist like himself and does not give him the opportunity to make his own choices. Despite their difficult cultures both Tom and Dr. Lowenstein live depressed lives and all they have for comfort is each other. After speaking with Tom, Dr. Lowenstein learns about the difficult and abusing childhood that Savannah lived. She eventually sees how her own family and the deep South has destroyed her as an individual. After one reads Prince of Tides one gets a sense of culture and landscape of the South and the difficult and harsh way of life there.
