Prince of Tides is a large, sprawling, epic novel that is powerful, brash, insightful, filled
with honesty, and resounding with drama. It provides a detailed and
memorable view of the decaying way of life in South Carolina and how it
destroys a family. The main character is Tom Wingo, an English teacher
and football coach who tries to start a new life, but is haunted by the
past, which is filled with violence and abandonment. Henry Wingo is his
cruel father who is in the shrimping business, but ultimately a loser
when it comes to business. He has always been abusive to his children
and wife, but once he tries to make peace with them it is probably too
late because of all the tensions that accumulated over the life. His
wife is Lily Wingo who is a strong, proud woman who endures her
husband?s abuse. Tom also has a brother and sister. His brother is
Luke. He is not very bright, but strong and tries to save his town. Tom
also has a troubled sister named Savannah. She is a brilliant poet, but
is depressed and in agony over his life.During the beginning of the
novel Tom seeks Savannah?s psychiatrist named Dr. Lowenstein. Recently
Savannah had numerous suicide attempts. Tom tries to uncover the
haunting past of Savannah?s life and his own families to uncover the
reasons behind their actions. It initially becomes evident how
differently Tom and Dr. Lowenstein live. She is from a rich, Jewish,
and educated family from New York. Tom is from a poor family in the
tidewaters of South Carolina. His family has always been looked down
upon and a result he has been ridiculed in school. His father blew the
family?s money on bad business and treats them harshly. His mother does
little to alleviate their concerns. She does not protect her children
from him and defends him almost every chance she gets.Through Tom?s
descriptions one gets a very detailed view of the landscape and way of
life in South Carolina. Their way of life is decaying as big business
and tourism is becoming prevalent. Eventually the government wants to
take their property for their purpose. Luke fights for his homeland and
leads the resistance. He puts up a brave fight and eventually loses his
fight. While talking to Dr. Lowenstein Tom notices how her life is not
happy as well. Her husband is a famous violinist, who seems to be
difficult to communicate with and distancing himself from her. She does
not like how he treats her son. He pressures him to become a violinist
like himself and does not give him the opportunity to make his own
choices. Despite their difficult cultures both Tom and Dr. Lowenstein
live depressed lives and all they have for comfort is each other. After
speaking with Tom, Dr. Lowenstein learns about the difficult and
abusing childhood that Savannah lived. She eventually sees how her own
family and the deep South has destroyed her as an individual. After one
reads Prince of Tides one gets a sense of culture and landscape of the
South and the difficult and harsh way of life there.
