Candide
(Voltaire)

Publicidade
The art of philosophy is explored in this tail of optimism in the most horrible of times. Candide, raised by metaphysician Dr. Pangloss, is expelled from his castle for kissing the beautiful Cunegoende. In his travels to return to the fair Cunegoende he continually finds himself in the worst of situations with his friends along the way. His friends also found themselves in dire straits. Bulgarians attacked the castle Thunder-Endt-Trunkt, raped and gutted Candide's love, Cunegoende, killed her parents, her brother. Candide had survived and was a slave for the Bulgarians. Pangloss is hanged, Candide commits murders for protection of himself and his love for Cunegoende. Two of the murders that split Candide and his lover apart again was the new owners of Cunegoende. Candide and his friend Cacambo make their travels after fleeing the Bulgarians to Eldorado, a secret country where the streets are paved with Gold and the grass is green with emeralds. Everyone is civil and things are as well as can be. To Candide, this is the place the Pangloss often philosophized about in his teachings. But the draw of love was too much and Candide continued after Cunegoende. Candide had been beaten, escaped torture and prosecution all in the name of love. With the riches he took with him from Eldorado, he was able to get passage on a Galley to Constantinople where it was said Cunegoende was washing dishes as a servant. On this voyage he ran into Pangloss again, who did not die when he was hanged. At the end of Candide's travels, Cunegoende was not the beauty she once was, Pangloss was not the optimist he once was, Martin was still miserable, Cacambo was humble and all decided that things are exactly how they should be.
