Lennon 'the Definitive Biography'
(Ray Coleman)
?Lennon The Definitive Biography? by Ray Coleman is the most complete biography written about John Lennon to date. History has recorded him as one of the great pacemakers of the Twentieth century; pop star, propagandist for peace, poet, artist, songwriter, philosopher and wit. The book covers his entire life from his school years through to his tragic death, on 8th December 1980, at the age of 40. The author draws on personal experiences from travelling with The Beatles as well as many interviews with John Lennon, friends, family and fellow musicians. Analysing the aspects of Lennon?s character has never presented a simple solution. Part of the reason is that in his seventeen years in the public eye he was his own fiercest critic. In a life that touched millions with its honesty and style, Lennon became the victim of many myths. Chief among these was that he was an uncaring, rumbustious rock ?n? roller with little compassion. Coleman says that the reverse was true and supports this through analysis of this life, songs, and writings. Since his death he has been worshipped and debunked, but neither sits comfortably around the memory of the man. In songs and in speech, he wrote his own commentary on his life, insisting that it was for others to make their own lives rather than elevate him to a spurious role of leader. As the years roll past and the music and message of his life achieve more sonority, it?s clear that while his assassin robbed him of the ultimate possession, he gave Lennon omnipotence in perpetuity as a seer and communicator. The book gives the fairest account of Lennon?s life written to date. Positive and negative aspects of his character and life are explored with the author not biasing one side or the other.
