One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
(Ken Kesey)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo?s Nest is more a novel
about free will than it is about the life of the mentally insane. The
novel takes place in a mental hospital run by the iron fist of Big
Nurse Ratchett. On the surface she may seen sympathetic, but she seeks
to completely control her patients and destroy their individuality.
Everything is peaceful and Big Nurse is in charge until McMurphy enters
the ward. He fakes being crazy and would rather spend some time in a
mental asylum than go to prison. He is reckless, rebellious, and
boisterous. He enjoys causing trouble and living a free existence. He
likes to live in the moment and have a lot of fun. He rallies his
fellow inmates against the strong rule of Big Nurse. He tries to get
the nurse to let them watch a baseball game. Even though he fails in
his attempt, McMurphy gains the support of the other patients. His
presence is the only thing preventing them from continuing to live a
dull existence. At first his rebellious behavior is seen as fun and the
nurse enjoys arguing with him, but then it turns into a bitter fight.
McMurphy?s insubordinate behavior continues and he begins to do drastic
things. He and other patients escape and go on a fishing trip and he
even smuggles prostitutes into the ward. The
nurse is a lot more powerful than McMurphy because she is an authority
figure who has the staff for support. All McMurphy has is his free
will. He wants to give his fellow patients a chance at a happier and
funnier life so they can enjoy themselves rather than do the same
monotonous activities. The novel has a shocking conclusion in which a
lobotomy is performed on McMurphy. This eliminates his ability to think
and quenches the other patient?s thirst for individuality. This shows
how the power of institutions such as the mental hospital can destroy
the individual and that our institutions are often too powerful for
their own good.
Overall, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a
fast-paced, inventive, and powerful book about what it means to be
human.
