Patriotic Murders
(Agatha Christie)
Patriotic Murders is one of the least known Hercule Poirot mysteries, yet it remains one of the most exciting and complex. At first Dr. Morley, who is Poirot?s dentist, is found dead in his office. The man he treated is a Greek named Amberiosis, who is found poisoned from an injection given to him by Morley. The police think that Morley made a mistake when operating on Amberiosis and as a result committed suicide. Poirot never buys this theory. Shortly after a Sainsbury Seale who is another patient of Morley?s disappears and the body of a woman is found in a mansion with her head disfigured who may or may not be her. Poirot must try to explain why these three people were killed when there does not seem to be any substantial evidence plus a lack of motive. The mystery itself is completely baffling and the identity of the murderer is a complete surprise, but what makes this book extra special is the political and economic events surrounding it. One of the key characters in the novel is an Alistair Blunt. There are theories that Morley was killed in an attempt to bribe Blunt. Blunt is an important public figure. He inherited a vast fortune from his wife and is responsible for running the banking system in England. There are many people who are against Blunt because they believe that there needs to be a reform in the nation?s economic policy. Throughout the novel the many sides of this issue are presented and views of the economic conditions of London are shown. Another interesting character is a reckless youth named Howard Raikes. He is a liberal who is against all that Blunt stands for. I personally found the mystery to be very complex and I recommend it to all mystery fans. I enjoyed all the ideas presented about the economic and social conditions of English life, which made the book even more exciting. Also, this book can be found under two alternative titles which are One Two Buckle My Shoe and An Overdose of Death.
