Across The Nightengale Floor
(Lian Hearn)

Across the Nightingale Floor: Tales of the Otori by Lian Hearn is a delightful adventure of a teenaged boy during the feudal era in Japan. Written from the boy?s point of view, the reader quickly discovers this is a coming-of-age tale. This is because as he learns and grows up his perspective matures and advances. Takeo is the narrator who grew up among a secret, mountain tribe of spiritual people. A gentle character, Takeo is rescued and adopted by Lord Otori Shigeru when his village is pillaged. Unknown to Takeo, his father who he never knew was a famous assassin and had special abilities. These special abilities were kind of supernatural. In his tribe they are common, but his tribe was slaughtered, so he is the last of the special people with these abilities. Under the guidance of Lord Otori, Takeo learns he too has the special abilities that his father had. He studies to become a warrior. Honing his skills he learns little by little how to master his special talents. Takeo meets many adventures where he must exercise his judgement and muster the courage to fight his father?s enemies. Through many trials, Takeo grows more confident in himself and leaves his playful, youthful desires behind. He meets a young woman and falls in love. Though I don't want to give away the story, I will say it has a satisfying ending.

Hearn?s Across the Nightengale Floor is the first book in the Otori trilogy. The plot is fast paced and gripping. It has a fairytale quality mixed in with an ancient Japanese twist. It is like Lord of the Rings or King Arthur but set in feudal Japan, told from an Asian point of view.
