In Katherine Gibson?s book Unclutter Your Life: Transforming Your Physical, Mental and Emotional Space, the reader learns that clutter can mean more than just physical objects. It can mean noise and busyness and negative thinking as well as self-doubt. Therefore, Gibson?s text, clutter takes on a whole new meaning?more like annoyances, subjective mental garbage and too many material objects. In Unclutter Your Life, the reader becomes aware of just how many distractions he or she is tolerating in their everyday environment. These distractions take energy to deal with and can be thought of as clutter.
The traditional clutter examined in the book are papers, junk in drawers, inherited objects and stuff in closets. Email is traditional clutter because it fills up our inbox. Nontraditional clutter can be divided into two categories: relationships with ourselves and with others and noise and distractive pollution in the environment. A relationship with ourselves can be considered as clutter when we talk down to ourselves, beat ourselves up or doubt ourselves. Noise, such as, fighting neighbors and the constant hum of an ice machine outside our apartment door can be thought of as mental clutter because it is draining our energy to deal with it.
These nontraditional definitions of clutter fall into what most people would think of as annoyances. However, when we realize that everything in our daily environment is energy. It either adds to us or takes away from us, then we know what we have to do. Get rid of it !
Unclutter Your Life is simply insightful and can help you clarify what it is that is taking up your time and energy. When you know what is draining you, then you can get rid of it.
