The Queen Of The Damned
(Rice, Anne)
Anne Rice is the queen of the modern vampire novel and she really knows how to make each incarnation fresh and lively. If you one of the few who have seen the two movies spanned from her novels and you?ve never read her novels, you?re in for a happy surprise. Her female vampires are more powerful and more intelligent than their male counterparts, and, Akasha, Queen of the Damned, is no exception. As always, this story is sexually-charged and brimming with fantastic action that only the undead can bring on. As the once-queen of the Nile is awoken from her deep sleep by the handsome and charismatic Lestat, Akasha quickly assesses the situation and takes charge. Not quite what the younger vampire ordered. Lestat never performs to Akasha?s satisfaction?and that?s in every sense of the word. Yet, the sheer spectacle of all the vampires converging in one place is fascinating. This, the third of the series chronicling Lestat?s ?life,? is as darkly mysterious and deeply spiritual as any of Rice?s books. She?s definitely in her element when revealing a character?s backstory or mirroring the inhumanity of man in the visage of a vampire. It?s the climactic scenes of battle and revenge that she?s least successful with, as if they?re a necessary counterpoint to her lush narrative and biting dialogue. Plots with plots, stories layered within stories, this novel does it again for her fans. It is the new reader to her series who may be the most disappointed since some of the central themes, and obviously the Lestat character, that are missing key insights given in the earlier novels. With all of the excitement and erotica that the novel dishes out, the ending seems a bit too complacent for a genre that Rice clearly commands. Still, it?s like a rollercoaster ride through a house of horrors, it keeps scaring and thrilling us at every turn. Rice manages to ply us with her prose once again.
