Irish History
(Seamus Mac Annaidh)
Parragon Publishing?s Irish History Minipedia volume is a fascinating journey into the history of the Emerald Isle from the Mesolithic period 9,000 years ago through the acceptance of the Nice Treaty on entry into the EU in 2002. Heavily illustrated with beautiful color photographs of everything from ancient burial mounds to armed soldiers in Londonderry and with drawings and paintings of Catholic icons and Irish leaders, the volume is as interesting to look at as it is to read. It?s called a Minipedia not due to its sparse content, but rather to its diminutive size. If you have a roomy back pocket, you could easily carry it around with you and that?s not a bad idea at all. It?s the perfect accompaniment to times when you find yourself with a few minutes to spare and nothing else to do, such as when your wife is shoe shopping. (Or your husband, for that matter!) Even if you aren?t terribly fascinated or familiar with Irish history, there are plenty of selections in here to grab and keep your attention. By browsing through these pages you just might spark a sudden interest in celtic legends or the battle for home rule. Framed in a chronological manner, Irish history is made easier to understand through the thorough introduction of names and events as they relate to history, rather than if the encyclopedia had tackled the history through subject areas. For instance, the rise of Christianity in Ireland is seen through how it merged with paganism that has already been investigated in earlier chapters. The long, bloody feud between Ireland and England is made understandable through detailed chapters showing the influence of English rulers on Ireland. The often difficult complexities of Irish politics is deconstructed through analysis of many leaders and movements. In addition to a full and useful index there is also a glossary of useful terms in the back of the book that focuses on those terms used most often. The Minipedia on Irish History is much more than just quick reference, it can readily be used as a source for high school or college papers and serves well as an introduction to those looking to dive more fully into the colorful history of Ireland, its people, places and cultures.
