King Hrothgar of Denmark, enjoys a prosperous and successful reign, and he even builds a great hall called Heorot where all of his warriors can gather to enjoy themselves. However, the beauty of hall, and the happiness of the men angers Grendel, a demon who lives in the swamplands of Hrothgar?s kingdom. Grendel enters the Hall and kills men every night. The creature cannot be defeated and fear reigns in the Danish countryside. One day, however, a young Geatish warrior named Beowulf arrives at Hrothgar?s kingdom to defeat Grendel.
At first the men are skeptical of Beowulf?s ability to destroy Grendel, but the Geat quickly gains the confidence and the respect of the Danes after he describes some of his past accomplishments. When Grendel arrives, Beowulf is prepared, and unarmed, he kills the creature.
The kingdom?s celebration is brought to an end when Grendel?s mother kills Hrothgar?s most trusted advisor to avenge her son?s death. Determined to put a stop to this slaughter, Beowulf travels to the swamplands, and he dives into the water where Grendel?s mother?s lair is located. After a challenging fight, Beowulf emerges victorious, and his praised by the Danes.
Much to the disappointed of Hrothgar, Beowulf returns to Geatland, content of his success in freeing the Danes from the evil monsters. Back home, Beowulf eventually becomes an admired and wise king, a title that he uses to bring prosperity to his people.
One day, however, when Beowulf is an old man, a disturbed dragon begins to unleash destruction upon the Geats. Knowing that his death his near, Beowulf decides to fight the dragon. Although he manages to kill the beast, his neck is bitten, and he soon dies. Sad not to have Beowulf?s leadership and courage to protect them, the Geats morn for their fallen king.
