A Christmas Carol
(Charles Dickens)
A Christmas Carol tells the story of a greedy and miserable old man named Ebenezer Scrooge, and is voyage to redemption. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge heads to bed, hating the holiday, and not wanting to participate in any of the festivities. He is stunned when he is visited by the ghost of his late partner, Jacob Marley who tells him how his greed and selfishness have been punished; he is condemned to wander about the Earth weighted down by shackles. He tells his partner that he is trying to same him from the same fate, and that three spirits will visit him. Scrooge?s deep sleep is disturbed by the arrival of the Ghost of Christmas past, a childlike phantom. The ghost shows him the past Christmases he had experienced, as well as his engagement to Belle, who will later leave him because of his great desire for money. Scrooge is deeply touched by the flashbacks. The Ghost of Christmas Present shows Scrooge the poverty of his clerk, Bob Cratchit, and of his family. They live in a very modest house, and they eat a meager feast. In addition, it is not easy for Cratchit to take care of his crippled son, Tiny Tim, who is nevertheless courageous and kind. The phantom then shows Scrooge the happiness and joy that the people gathered at his nephew?s Christmas party are experiencing. This affects Scrooge greatly. Finally, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows Scrooge his own death. Scrooge begs the specter to alter his fate, promising in return to change is attitude towards others, and towards Christmas. The ghost disappears, and Scrooge finds himself safe and sound in his bed. He is overjoyed by the fact that he has returned to Christmas day and that he has a chance to redeem himself. He starts by sending Cratchit a giant turkey, and he attends the Christmas party of his nephew. He will hold true to his promise and continue to give gifts to the poor, and treat everyone around him with kindness and generosity.
