A Christmas Carol tells the
story of a greedy and miserable old man named Ebenezer Scrooge, and is voyage
to redemption. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge heads to bed, hating the holiday, and
not wanting to participate in any of the festivities. He is stunned when he is
visited by the ghost of his late partner, Jacob Marley who tells him how his
greed and selfishness have been punished; he is condemned to wander about the
Earth weighted down by shackles. He tells his partner that he is trying to same
him from the same fate, and that three spirits will visit him.





Scrooge?s deep sleep is disturbed by the
arrival of the Ghost of Christmas past, a childlike phantom. The ghost shows
him the past Christmases he had experienced, as well as his engagement to
Belle, who will later leave him because of his great desire for money. Scrooge
is deeply touched by the flashbacks.





The Ghost of Christmas
Present shows Scrooge the poverty of his clerk, Bob Cratchit, and of his
family. They live in a very modest house, and they eat a meager feast. In
addition, it is not easy for Cratchit to take care of his crippled son, Tiny
Tim, who is nevertheless courageous and kind. The phantom then shows Scrooge
the happiness and joy that the people gathered at his nephew?s Christmas party
are experiencing. This affects Scrooge greatly.





Finally, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows Scrooge his own death. Scrooge begs the specter
to alter his fate, promising in return to change is attitude towards others,
and towards Christmas. The ghost disappears, and Scrooge finds himself safe and
sound in his bed.





He is overjoyed by the fact that he has
returned to Christmas day and that he has a chance to redeem himself. He starts
by sending Cratchit a giant turkey, and he attends the Christmas party of his
nephew. He will hold true to his promise and continue to give gifts to the
poor, and treat everyone around him with kindness and generosity.
