The Scarlett Letter

The story takes place in Boston with a woman named Hester Prynne. She is totally shamed because she has commited adultery against her husband who is at sea. She is taken from the jail and sent to another town. There she shamed by having to wear a red letter "A" which identifies her as being adulterous. She is to wait in the town for her husband to arrive, however her husband never makes it to the town. It is assumed that he is dead because of his journes out to sea. Hester is than forced to make her living as a seamstress to support her and her child Pearl.
Hester meets Arthur Dimmesdale; a minster, who encourages the community not to shun Hester and daughter out of the community. Pearl is constantly being tormented for her mothers sins and she suffers alot of torment. Roger Chillingsworth, Hester husband who is now a doctor sees that Dimmesdale is withering away because of his condition. One night while he sleeps Chillingworth realizes that Dimmesdale has a letter "A" burned into his flesh. He realizes what the letter is for and sees the connection between the two. Chillingsworth wants to gain revenge on the two because now he is aware of both of their affair. Throughout the entire book Chillinsworth is trying to seek revenge of both Hester and Dimmesdale and eventually Chillingsworth dies.
Dimmesdale eventually reveals himself as being the adultery as well and he also dies as Pearl gives him a kiss. Hester and Pearl leave town after the revalation that has just occured. When Peal grows up she marries a weatlthy aristocrat and starts her own family. Hester dies a few years later and she is given a plot by Dimmesdale. The tombstone is shared by both with a letter "A" engraved into it.
