Of Mice And Men
(John Steinbeck)
Of Mice and Men is a short novel written by John Steinbeck. This famous story tells the story of two friends, Lennie and George, as they live the life of travelling farmhands. Lennie has some sort of mental disability, and George takes care of him, and has for years. Lennie could not survive on his own without George. The story starts as the pair is making their way to another farm to begin another job. They lose jobs fairly quickly, mostly because of Lennie. Lennie is carrying a dead mouse as a pet, as he has an obsession with soft pretty things, but George makes him get rid of it, fearing disease. They sit during the night and talk of their dreams - owning a house and a farm and living there, raising rabbits, never working for someone else again and never having to move again. Lennie gets so excited every time that George tells of this dream of theirs. The next morning the two men report to the nearby farm to start work. They meet many various farmhands and people. They meet an old farmhand named Candy, who has an old, good for nothing dog. Everyone keeps bugging Candy that he needs to just shoot the dog and put it out of his, and everyone elses, misery. Candy finally agrees, sadly, and the dog is quickly and easily shot by one of the farmhands. The boss of the farm has a son named Curly, who is newly married to a beautiful, but flirtatious, wife. She is always flirting with the hands, and Curly is always getting angry and jealous, hunting her down all over the farm. When he cannot find her, he decides to pick a fight with Lennie, as he knows Lennie is not very bright. However, Lennie is very strong, and ends up crushing Curly's hand. Lennie's friends go to the brothel, and he is left with Crooks, the black stable hand, and Candy. Curly's wife comes over and talks with them, and becomes fascinated with Lennie. She comes back to see him in the barn the next day, and Lennie tells her that he accidently killed one of the new puppies. She consoles him by letting him pet her hair. Lennie accidently pulls too hard, and she screams. In an effort to quiet her, he accidently breaks her neck, killing her. He flees into the fields away from the farm, to the place where George had told him to go if anything went wrong. When the men discover the body of Curly's wife, they form a party to go find and kill Lennie. George finds Lennie first, as he knows where he is, and George knows what he has to do. George begins telling Lennie the story of their dream again, the farm with the rabbits, and as he tells the story, he shoots Lennie in the back of the head.
