On August 8, 1965 National Geographic photographer Robert Kincaid, 52, left Bellingham, Washington enroute to Madison County, Iowa. His assignment was to photograph a number of covered bridges that were plentiful in the area. Unable to locate the final bridge for the series, Robert pulls into a driveway and finds a pleasant looking woman sitting on her front step enjoying the warm afternoon.

Francesca Johnson is a 45-year-old married mother of two, once a young Italian war bride and now an Iowa farmer?s wife. Surprising herself by her forwardness, Francesca offers to show the rugged stranger Roseman Bridge herself.

Both are ordinary people and both feel alone in their individual lives. They are instantly drawn together. Having been married for only five years at one point, Robert has no offspring.

Francesca on the other hand, has been married to Richard Johnson since her early twenties. Their children are now teenagers. She is content with her life but feels invisible to her loved ones and yearns to have passion back in her life.

Richard, Francesca?s husband, has taken their kids to the county fair for a few days allowing Francesca some time for herself. But she could never have anticipated meeting a man like Robert.

The spark between them is immediate. Despite her reservations Francesca yearns to know more about this mysterious nomad. For his part Robert is intrigued not only by Francesca?s intelligence but also by her enthusiasm and love of life.
