This book is an excellent book explaining the harships and trials of a women who has returned to her old town. Janie the main character returns to Eatonville, Florida where she is greeted by her bestfriend and grandmother. Janie looks very torn and tattered and people begin to talk about where she has come from. Even further people speculate about her relationship with Tea Cake a former lover of hers. Janies grandmother insist that she get married, her mother has skewed her views of the world and in her gradmothers eyes she needs to settle down. Janie finds a handsome man named Logan Killicks. She moves in with him and than realizes that he treats her terribly and doesn't respect her at all. A man by the name of Joe Starks (Jody) moves into town and sweet talks Janie. She moves with him to a part of Eatonville that is all black. He doesn't let her interact with common people and truly she just seems to be a trophy wife she really cant speak her mind about certain issues. Janie is not pleased because she is a free spirit who wants to be heard. One day Joe embarasses Janie by making a comment about her appearance and Janie explains that he is impotent and is worth nothing. Jody becomes angry and beats Janie. Jody than eventually becomes ill and than dies. Janie finally starts to become close with Tea Cake after her husband Jody's death. They get married and start to truly fall in love with each other again. There is a terrible hurricane that comes into the town. In the mix of all the comotion Tea Cake is bitten by a rabbies infected dog without Janie realizing his condition. Soon after he is delerious and accuses Janie of cheating on him. She than ends up killing him trying to save her life. She goes to trial where she is aquitted of the charges and returns back home to her simply life with her bestfriend.
