Awesome! Honestly, I could end the summary here, and be satisfied that you know all that you need to know. However I know that not to be the case. I know that you need to know more, so here I will give it to you (just in case you haven?t seen Jack Nicholson in his all-too-real depiction of Jack Torrance).
Stephen King brings alive Jack Torrance, the struggling alcoholic/writer for the readers delight (or fear, whichever you prefer). The Overlook Hotel is the backdrop for the story, as Torrance seeks solitude for his true passion, writing. It doesn?t take long before the family troubles come to light and it is revealed that Torrance is a recovering alcoholic, and has abused his little boy on occasion. However this little boy isn?t just an ordinary little boy, as this boy has the shine, a psychic sort of power that is capable of scaring the reader. King brings together the distinct entities, Jack Torrance, The Overlook Hotel, and Danny Torrance, all with a fury altogether King. You see, The Overlook Hotel is more than just a hotel, it is a malevolent entity with an agenda all its own, and a past all too unsettling. As Jack Torrance deteriorates (due to cabin fever and who knows what else), The Hotel manipulates and plots, all the while revealing its little secrets. King manages to make you feel sorry for Torrance even as he plunders and kills. That is no small feat. In addition he manages not to overcomplicate little Danny with complex thoughts as many novels do, hurting the credibility of the character being a small child. All in all the story has many, many compelling elements, and it is a true Stephen King classic. Read this even if you?ve seen the movie. Read this at night, if you dare.
