The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers
(J.R.R. Tolkien)
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, is the second book in the trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, written by JRR Tolkien. This book starts where the first book left off. Merry and Pippen have been kidnapped by orcs, and the rest of the fellowship, minus Frodo and Sam, and Boromir who has died, set off in search of the two. The two hobbits manage to escape from the orcs, as the orcs are distracted by a battle with riders on horseback, and escape into a forest. In this forest, they meet with a giant talking tree, which is in fact a creature known as Ents. The Ents have a council and take the two hobbits under their wing, after meeting up with Gandalf. It turns out that Gandalf had died, but had been brought back to live by the forces that be, because he had not yet fufilled all that he was meant to do. The hobbits tell the Ents of the evil plans of Saurman, a wizard who has fallen prey to evil and is breeding a race of orcs, and destroying the forests, at the command of Sauron. The Ents go off to Saurman's tower and break the dam holding back the river, sending a flood into the entire place, putting out the fires that were burning down the trees, and trapping Saurman in his tower. Meanwhile, the rest of the group find Gandalf and he tells them that the two hobbits are safe and tells them of trouble brewing at Helms deep. They set off to the land of Rohan, trying to convince the king there to fight for his land. After much convincing, he is broken from the power of evil put on him by his counsellor, Wormtongue, who has been working for Saurman. The king, Theoden, decides to fight, and he and his men, and women, head for helms deep, their fortress. They are surronded and invaded, with what seems like no hope. Eventually they face their impeding doom and ride out to die in battle. At the last minute when it seems all is lost, the riders of Rohan come with Gandalf and save the day. In the meantime, Frodo and Sam have teamed up with Gollum, a weird hobbit like creature who has been corrupted by the ring, to find the Mount Doom and the land of Sauron. They make their way toward that land, and, after being kidnapped by Boromir's brother Faramir and released, they find the winding staircase towards Mordor. Gollum has a plan of his own, however, and has led them towards a giant spider creature called Shelob, who seemingly kills Frodo. Sam is worried, and takes the ring, planning to destroy it himself thinking Frodo is dead. He finds out as orcs take Frodo that he isn't actually dead, and then the book ends.
