For a Sign and a Witness: a case for design in the universe, David L. Teuling, 1988;
Muskegon, Mich., Artesian Books, 153pp, illustrated.

Teuling?s efforts make a thought-provoking contribution to the field of Sacred Geometry. His book focuses upon the recurrent use of the Circle and Square as the underlying plan of such monuments as the Great Pyramid and Stonehenge. A number of well-executed illustrations help the reader grasp esoteric aspects of circle/square inter-actions including rectification of perimeters, better known as ?circle-squaring.? One of the author?s interesting observations is that a large circle, with a circumference equal to that of a square enclosing a smaller circle, representing the earth, will accommodate exactly both the earth and moon stacked one upon the other. Scale drawings incorporating current planetary diameter estimates show this is indeed the case. Pon-dering these and other such cosmic ?coincidences? Teuling, a self-professed Christian, concludes that an Intelligent Designer must have designed the Cosmos. In his words:
?The square and the circle! Here is the key to it all- a symbol of surpassing power that unifies man?s existence with the design of the very planet on which he dwells, unique in the universe.? The evidence he presents supports this claim and will bemuse the geometrically-inclined reader. Teuling is weakest when he tries to link this hoary tradition to Christianity via a numerical contrivance using the Greek values for the letters in Christ?s name. The number is of importance to the science he is attempting to reconstruct, but it is certain that many Greek words and phrases would ?add up? to the same root-number. For all we know (without doing the homework) ?Plato is a radish? would yield the same value. Moreover, Teuling seems to have known nothing of the Sumerians and their precocious astronomical gnosis, much of which is detectable here. All-in-all, the Designer God presented in the pages of For a Sign and a Witness looks much more like the Freemasons? Great Architect of the universe than Jehova.
