The Return Of The King
(J.R.R Tolkien)
The Return of the King begins with the arrival of Gandalf and Pippin at the city of Minas Tirith in the realm of Gondor. They then meet the city?s Steward, Denethor, the father of Boromir and Faramir. Denethor greatly dislikes Gandalf, but Pippin offers the steward his services in recognition of the sacrifice that Boromir made. Realizing that the armies of Mordor are preparing to march on Minas Tirith, Aragon, Legolas, and Gimili depart to the Paths of the Dead, where they convince a huge army of Sleepless Dead to help them defend Minas Tirith. Meanwhile, Faramir is seriously wounded when him and some other men try to slow down the advance of Sauron?s forces. As a fierce battle rages outside Minas Tirith, Denethor loses his mind, and locks himself with a crypt along with the nearly dead Faramir and plans to kill himself and his son. The defenses of Minas Tirith nearly fail, but the Riders of Rohan come to the aid of Gondor. King Théoden is killed in the battle, as are many others. Just as the army of Mordor prepares an other assault on the city, Aragorn and the Sleepless Dead arrive and decimate the evil army. Back in the crypt, Pippin and Gandalf stop Denethor from killing his son, but the steward still manages to commit suicide. Fortunately, Aragorn heals Faramir, and he will become the king of Gondor. Knowing that Frodo will need all the help he can get, the armies of the west march on the Black Gate in order to distract Sauron from the quest of the hobbit. Meanwhile, Sam rescues Frodo from the Orcs, and they continue their quest to destroy the ring. When they finally reach Mount Doom, the ring has completely taken control of Frodo who refuses to destroy it. Suddenly, Gollum appears, and desiring the ring for himself, he bites of the finger that Frodo is wearing it on. However, Gollum accidentally stumbles and falls in the Cracks of Doom. Sauron?s power is reduced to nothing, and the armies of the west defeat Sauron?s forces. With the help of a giant eagle, Gandalf rescues Frodo and Sam. When the hobbits return to the Shire, they are saddened to learn that their home is under the oppression of a group of men. Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin organize a rebellion and drive away the intruders. The leader turns out to be Saruman who is then killed by his servant Wormtongue. The hobbits rebuild the Shire and return to their ordinary lives. Sam marries a hobbit named Rosie, and together they have a daughter. Frodo, for ever changed by the burden of the Ring-quest, decides to leave the Shire. He sails away over the Great Sea with Gandalf, Bilbo, and the other Ring-bearers to the peaceful paradise in the unknown West.
