Antony rewards her by not listening to the urgent news that arrives from Rome. Later Antony does listen to the messenger only to find out that Rome has lost territory, there is a rebellion and his wife is now dead. Antony laments his choices and orders his troops return to Rome.
During his stay in Rome Antony reports to the emperor and makes an uneasy with him by agreeing to marry his sister, Octavia. News arrives that Pompey is on the move to make war with Rome and Antony is once again placed in an uneasy alliance with Caesar and himself and Pompey. Much to Octavia?s anger as well as Cleopatra?s Antony?s love life is reported to each woman. Antony tries to appease Octavia promising loyalty to her and again to Cleopatra. Antony brings Cleopatra to fight with him against Caesar on the high seas much to the dismay and displeasure of not only the emperor of Rome but also Antony?s new wife, the emperor?s sister, Octavia.
Cleopatra seeing no other way out after an argument with Antony leaves his side and sends word that she has committed suicide while using her final breath to speak his name and her love for him. The lie is delivered to Antony as he watches the defeat of his forces and Cleopatra?s forces retreating to Caesar?s side. He begs Eros, a servant, to kill him. Eros however chooses to kill himself leaving Antony alone. Antony in an attempt to kill himself on his sword only wounds his side. Seeing his pain the lie is revealed for the lie and Antony is taken to Cleopatra?s side. There they declare their love to each other and Cleopatra returns home to Egypt to prepare for surrender to Rome. She gets word of Caesar?s marriage proposal and the shame she will face just before Caesar arrives to take possession of her kingdom.
