The Longest Night
(S Lamp)
The Longest Night It was all over and the sun was brimming over the edge of the window as she dared to slide from under the table to breathe, to relax and finally have faith that it was all over. The night had been the longest of her life. When it had started she had no idea what was coming, no idea how serious it was, no idea that this could be the end. The end of everything she knew. Everything she trusted. Everything she believed in. This was the night that everyone?s faith and spirit had been pushed to the limits. A night where the weak had fallen like a child?s building blocks. A night where the strong had been overcome with fear, anguish and had fallen almost as easily as the weak. A night where the world?s population had become a victim to a vicious, violent, relentless attack. The longest night had changed the world. Change the way people saw their position in the world. But mostly it had recreated the future population of the world. For no one knew it at this time. No one could possibly know it, but the few who were left. The one?s who were spared. The one?s who thought they had the strength and courage to make it. They were the ones who had been selected. They?d been monitored, watched, specially chosen for their skills in one area, talent in another, looks, personality, shape, eye color, whatever it was they had been chosen. They would be the ones to re-populate the world. All the time thinking they had survived and that they were the stronger, luckier ones. But they were just selected, hand picked to continue a job that had begun that night, that longest night. She gasped when she saw the destruction facing her. She could hardly believe that the world could be torn so brutally. But here she stood, alive and well. She hesitated as she opened the door, but once it was fully opened she breathed and relaxed and realised she?d made it. She was strong and alive and life was still hers and she would make it work for her? This time nothing would stop her? There was a flicker of light in the distance and she could hardly tell if it was the sun or something else? It was the sun. She watched as it crept slowly over the sky line edging towards the sky, desperate for its own freedom from the horizon which had bound it long past its release time. The sun rose and all around her she felt a warmth. A feeling which cheered her though she didn?t understand why at the time. Time was to explain to her though that the world had been attacked and taken over. Though she would not know it until she was a grandmother of five children. She was not to know for many years that she had been selected to live and spawn a new race of humans. A race of humans who would be under the complete control of their attackers. A race who would develop the planet in such a way as it could be harvested, repeatedly, by the creatures who really controlled it. She would discover in her old age that she had not been strong and had not been a survivor on that terrible night but that she had been selected, over a process of several years to become one of the remaining, one of the ?workers?. The ?workers? just like ants were left to rebuild and re-populate the planet so that it could be harvested every 100 years by the creatures. The people left were selected for many reasons, but mostly they were selected for their desire to create a peaceful and productive world. In their lifetime of working to achieve this across the world they were simply creating a world that was more fruitful to their attackers. They spent many years working to achieve peace and harmony only for their attackers to return and destroy, or harvest what they had accomplished.
