Who Am I?
(Casting Crowns)
Who am I, by Casting Crowns. Album: Casting Crowns (2003) This is perhaps Casting Crowns? most acclaimed song. Casting Crowns is a band well-known in the Christian contemporary music scene. With powerful, soul-reflecting lyrics and well-matched instrumentals, this song is a point for contemplation of the self and one?s faith. From start to finish, this is a song of humility and praise to God. The first words are ?Who am I,? a question that human beings have been asking throughout the ages. Philosophers have debated over the human essence, what it really means to be a human. Scientists have tried to boil it down to chemical reactions and physical laws. The religious have defined our identity in terms of some supernatural force called the soul or spirit. People have thought of many different answers to this simply-phrased, yet endlessly complex question. Before the answer is given in this song, we first hear about human beings in comparison to an eternal God. Why would an everlasting, all-powerful, omnipotent God care about an insignificant, short-lived person such as me? And if He is God, how can He feel my hurt? Can God really guide me through life as a morning star? The answer is assumed yes, as the lyrics go on: ?Not because of who I am, but because of what You?ve done, not because of what I?ve done, but because of who You are.? This is the Christian way of looking at life and at God. We are powerless by ourselves, faulty human beings who cannot save ourselves from the inevitability of death. But before death comes, we are still powerless to stop life?s woes from happening to us, and we are constantly plagued by the actions we have committed that the Bible calls sins, which separate us from the perfect God. Our essence is flawed, prone to sin, and this is what disallows us from claiming any capability to come close to God?s magnificence. It is all because of who God is---eternal, loving, and just---and because of what He has done---given Himself as a sacrifice for our sins---that we are even able to approach Him to worship Him. After this humble confession, Casting Crowns presents the answer to the human identity question. We are temporary flashes in the fabric of time-space, quickly forgotten by the world after we die. And even during life, we are constantly insecure, tossed about by forces larger than us. The only thing that can support us and save us is God, who despite our rejection of Him and misunderstanding Him, still loves us and calls our name through the turmoil of this world. In the last verses of the song, we find out what else we are, a status that raises us above our temporary, helpless existence. ?We are Yours.? God has told us that we are His, our souls crafted by His hand. He defines our existence. Because of this knowledge, we have nothing to fear from this world. The answer to this perplexing question is a revelation believers have experienced in their faith. Only this answer is sufficient to explain who we, at the core of our beings, are.
