Roads To Mussoorie

There are not many things that we cherish about the British occupation, but the good that it did for us is the fact that Ruskin Bond stayed behind. The grand old man is the landmark of the hills of Mussoorie, India. What delights me is that over a period of time, he has spun some exemplary stories to suit all age groups. This compilation is a very apt example of the same. Mountains, trees, old associations and for the believers, there are some very convincing ghost stories, too. The sense of humour never deserts his stories, so there?s ample of that as well.
Last year, he visited my son?s school in Delhi ? He knows a lot about cricket, you know, Mom! My son?s very impressed. For whatever reasons, cricket or his writings, Ruskin Bond has another fan. The school authorities had very cleverly put up stalls of his books for the children to buy and get them autographed. So, there were no incidents like the one he narrates in one of his stories ? about this lady who says that her son is very fond of his books, please could he sign one for him and then offers him Tom Sawyer to sign!!
Authors and poets should continue to live in beautiful places to inspire them to write beautiful literary pieces for us to read. I have been to Windermere and Grasmere (Wordsworth?s birthplace) and for the little time I was there, I experienced a metamorphosis and I too, developed some poetic instincts. But they were very short lived and just lasted for the duration of our stay there with nothing to show of it!
But then, I also observed that not all people living in beautiful places turn into poets and writers. It requires a lot of imagination and dreams to lay foundations on. And most significantly, it requires hordes of ravenous patience to write, scrap it and then write all over again.
Thank God for the hills, the deodar trees, the incredible imagination and the fortitude exhibited by these great writers and poets. And of course, thank God for Ruskin Bond!
