Invasion
(Robin Cook)
The first sign of the invasion is the simultaneous explosion of electronic equipment during a meteor shower. The second is the appearance of a mysterious flu-like illness. This flu is nasty but short-lived for most, but deadly for those with chronic conditions such as diabetes or epilepsy. Those who survive are strangely changed: stronger, seemingly obsessed with environmental issues and with sex, and having the ability to communicate wordlessly with others of their kind. As more become changed by the illness, those who have not been infected find themselves threatened. ?Invasion? is a medical science-fiction thriller. The questions pile up from chapter to chapter. What ruined all the electronic equipment? What is the source of the flu? How is it transmitted? Why do people seem so changed by the illness? What is its origin? How can it be defeated? Can its effects be reversed? The first to be affected is Beau Stark, a brilliant college student just about to graduate. His fiancee Cassy and their friend Pitt are disturbed by the changes in Beau and seek help from Dr. Sheila Miller, head of the university medical center?s emergency department. Homicide detective Jesse Kemper becomes involved when he is called to investigate the bizarre death of a cleaner in the medical center; not only was the man killed, but the hospital room fixtures were melted and twisted. The group shortly seeks the further help of a virologist and her physicist husband. As more and more people become infected, the personality changes become more recognisable, the outlook more terrifying, and the possible answers more bizarre. In no time at all, the small group is forced to flee their homes and the hospital, pursued by the very agencies that should be helping to find the answers. The contagion quickly spreads from California across the United States, and then to the rest of the world. Humanity is facing extinction. As the story winds to its conclusion, it seems impossible that mankind could survive. The plot keeps the reader guessing and cheering for the home team right to the last page.
