The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe
(Douglas Adams)

In The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, the sequel to The Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams once again delights us with his unparalleled slightly satirical humor. Arthur Dent, Trillian, Zaphod Beebebrox, Ford Prefect and Marvin the terribly depressed robot all join us again to try and sort out the giant mess they're gotten themselves into this time. Their current mess starts out with the impending destruction of their ship, the amazing Heart of Gold, but it soon becomes clear that worse things are afoot. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe spends more time on plot than the original book, which enables Adams to play with several subplots and put his clever mind to use with more than just random comedy. In the main plot, Zaphod and the others become separated as he goes on a journey to try and clear up his past, while the rest of the group simply want to know where they are and how to leave. And, in the case of Arthur Dent of course, where to find a nice cup of tea. Newcomers to the scene include Zaphod's Great Grandfather (long dead), and Zarniwoop, who works for the Guide and has information about Zaphod's strange past. They help Zaphod on his quest (whether he likes it or not) and try to keep his life and soul intact along the way. Other sub-plots include visiting the actual Restaurant at the End of the Universe and watching the universe explode, and the discovery of how life really came to exist on Earth, or at least modern society. The book is everything we want in a sequel and Adams wows us again with his unique humor and clever plot twists. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe has more plot than The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but don't let that fool you. The book is just as funny as the original, and possibly even crazier. Start with the first book to get the background information, but still put this book on your next humor/sci fi reading list.
