NARRATIVE TECHNICHE IN ?OLD MAN AND THE SEA?

Ernest Hemingway has created a unique niche for himself in the whole corpus of English Literature with his inimitable style. His style is fashioned by metaphorical dimensions, irony, allusion and deliberate simplicity. It is unique in its non-literary style. All his novels are simple with the exception of For Whom the Bell Tolls. In all his stories, Hemingway echoes his powerful philosophy:?Man can be destroyed, but not defeated.?It was Hemingway?s preoccupation with Nada ??the edge of nothingness, the abyss of non-meaning.?,that lead him to counter it. Therefore, the protagonists of Hemingway exhibit extraordinary fortitude even at the point of death.
Hemingway?s prose is renowned for its clarity. The statements are colloquial, curt and clipped. He always utilizes a minimum number of verbs; the forms of ?to be? being frequent. Hemingway does not make use of high-sounding words. Hemingway considered the noun as the most significant part of speech,as it could stand for concrete objects and symbolize abstract ideas. Therefore we find an abundance of the same linked by conjunctions, implying the flow of experience.
The novelist?s extensive use of symbolism functions like an ?objective correlative? conveying the flow of experience. The OLD man in The Old Man and the SEA is a fisherman. This functions as a part of Christian symbolism in the novel. In Greek mythology, the sea-god Nereus is often referred to as ?the old man of the sea?. Thus the novelist fuses religion, myth and reality in his symbolism. He also makes use of psycho-analytical symbolism: the consciousness of the author is blended with that of the character. Hemingway?s hero strives for perfection against all odds, as Hemingway became a perfectionist later in life. aThus the autobiographical strain.
The characters are very limited but make up for the same by operating as powerful metaphors. Manolin, for instance, stands for the Old man?s childhood; at the same time it also reflects the inner youth of the old man which infuses him with spirit. A realist and Naturalist, Hemingway practices the strictest objectivity in writing. Like Brecht, he prefers to intellectually stimulate rather than emotionally drain. Characterisation is built through dialogue and narrative, The novel is concise and precise and can hence be termed as a novelette which is at once a metaphor of life itself.
