You know those writers who always have the prettiest sounding words for saying things, always sound like they?ve swallowed a dictionary? Odds are they either have a thesaurus open at the side of them, or at least learned to write that way with one. They work a little like dictionaries, only instead of an explanation following each word there?s a long list of synonyms (heh, I?d planned to look up ?synonym? to demonstrate how it worked, but it turns out that it?s one word which isn?t featured, at least not in my copy, (apograph, archetype, autotype, borrowing, calque, carbon copy, counterfeit, crib, duplicate, ectype, engrossment, exemplar, facsimile, flimsy, forgery, image, imitation, likeness, loan-translation, loan-word, model, pattern, photocopy, plagiarisation, print, replica, replication, representation, reproduction, tracing, transcript, transcription, Xerox®) make of that what you will), useful when you know more or less what it is you?d like to say, but can?t quite put your finger on the best way to say it. Two words can often have the same general meaning, but carry very different implications, indicating the subtle distinctions that you might want to make in your writing; there?s a world of difference between ?making love? and ?fucking?.

Also, and I understand and respect that often functionality in writing is more important than beauty, but some words just sound better than others in certain places. Read through a poet you like, or a particularly elegant prose writer, try substituting different words in without altering the meaning of the piece, see how it changes the effect that their writing has? This is why the use of language is an art rather than a science, the same way you couldn?t (as far as I?m concerned) ever compose a mathematical formula to determine whether a piece of music is beautiful or not, or identify a person as being beautiful by the measurements of their faces without having seen them. Part of the fun of writing is in the fine detail, playing with the words, and the proper use of a thesaurus can add significantly to your toybox.
