The Northern Lights

Considered to be a phenomena in children?s literature the Northern lights is the first in what went on to be one of the most controversial and popular books of modern teenage literature.
The scene is set in world similar to ours in the late 19th ? early 20th century. It is a parallel dimension, a world where peoples souls are physical manifestations in the form of animals, where giant talking polar bears rule the North pole, where the church dominates and where witches fly free across the north.
Lyra Belaqua a rebellious orphan living in oxford breaking into a male only secret meeting and hiding. Before the meeting she sees the headmaster of the college poisoning a glass of Tokay of one of the visitors, Lord Asrael, who is no less than Lyras uncle. Unable to allow harm to come to her uncle she jumps out to stop him drinking it saving his life. In doing so she may of just brought her whole world crashing down. He forces her back into hiding just before the headmaster returns with the other head scholars. She eavesdrops on the secret meeting and Lord Asrael shows his discovery, strange golden particles captured by special camera lenses in the far north and more importantly refining them to show another world, a sort of reflection of another dimension in the sky. Naming these strange particles as Dust, the shocked scholars instantly give lord Asrael funding for a second expedition.
Following strange rumours of a group of child kidnappers Lyras best friend Roger vanishes. Coinciding with his disappearance a strange woman by the name of Mrs Coulter arrives at Oxford her daemon, a strange golden monkey. Her amazing persuasive powers convince Lyra to leave oxford and travel to London and work for the General Oblation Board. Before leaving she is given a strange compass called an Alethiometer. But soon she discovers that Mrs Coulter is no other than the leader of the kidnappers and that the monkey is trying to steal the alethiometer from her. Lyra flees at once and goes into hiding with the Gyptians, an old gypsy community.
Hiding with the gypsies she discovers that Mrs Coulter is in fact her mother and Asrael her father. The two are now mortal enemies working for opposite factions on something to do with the north. Due to her work with Mrs Coulter she concludes that the children must have been taken to the north as well. She also learns what the alethiometer is and how to read it, a skill that usually takes a lifetime to answer and with its power she can answer any given question with ease.
The Gyptians having lost significant numbers of children to the General oblation board then mount a rescue expedition to the north to save they?re children.
Stopping in Lapland to consult the witches Lyra meets Iorek Byrnison a giant armoured bear forced to work because the local populace have stolen his armour, using the alethiometer she finds it and the bear is indebted to her. They also hire balloonist, Lee Scoresby.
The expedition then sets of for Bolvanger a strange station in the arctic where they have discovered the children have been taken and worse. They finally discover what the church is doing. Believing Dust is in fact a physical manifestation of sin generated by the soul in adolescence. They have been experimenting with ways to sever the children from their daemons or souls before they can reach adolescence thus preserving innocence.
Before the Gyptians reach Bolvanger they are ambushed and Lyra is kidnapped herself. Waking up in Bolvanger she finally finds roger. When she is caught in the act of escape with the aid of a strange bird they try to separate her from her daemon but she is saved by the most unlikely of people, Mrs coulter. As this happens the Gyptians arrive and begin assaulting the base. In the confusion Lyra and her friend escape in the balloon to rescue her father.

However she is captured by armouured bears of King, Iofur Raknison. Iofur is a ruler who usurped the throne of Iorek. Using hher ability to lie, she tricks him into challenging Iorek to a duel, when he arrives in his rescue attempt. During the duel Iorek realises that Iofer is no longer a true bear and has forgotten his natural instincts. Using this to his advantage Iorek tricks Iofer and reclaims his throne.
Indebted even further Iorek takes Lyra and Roger to Svalbard where her father is imprisoned. On arriving he is not as releived to be rescued as one would think, obsessed with his experiments on Dust he claims that it could be used to break into another dimension, one of many
The next morning Lord Asrael has kidnapped roger and left. Lyra chases after him but is caught in a battle between mrs coulters army of the church and the witches and Gyptians, Iorek carries her through the fight but cannot get across a ravine so Lyra must face Asrael alone.
After a desperate struggle roger is parted from his Dæmon and killed. The ensueing blast creats a rift in the universe, a bridge to another world. Tear eyed and overwhelmed with grief Lyra and her Dæmon make up their mind and walk into the sky concluding the first part of the trilogy
