A Midsummer Night's Dream
(William Shakespeare)

Theseus, the King of Athens, is preparing for his nuptials with Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons. Egeus complains to Theseus of his daughter, Hermia?s refusal to marry her father?s chosen husband for her, Demetrius. Hermia is shows to love Lysander instead, but Egeus is adamant that she marry Demetrius. Theseus commands that she follow her father?s wishes, or she will be forced to enter a convent or be condemned to death. After such strong language, Hermia and Lysander decide to flee Athens and escape into the forest to elope. Helena, who secretly loves Demetrius, is informed of their intended elopement and decides to tell Demetrius of their flight, so that she can follow him into the woods out of love for him. Meanwhile, a group of players are preparing a performance for Theseus? wedding. They decide, also, to rehearse in the forest and make as good a performance as they can. In the forest, where all are off to, the fairies are at odds with one another because the fairy queen, Titania is fighting with her King, Oberon. Each of them is jealous and upset of the other. It appears that Hippolyta used to be a favorite of Oberon?s, and he has come for her wedding to Theseus. He wants Titania to give up an orphan child she has, but she refuses. Oberon plots revenge and seeks a love potion to make Titania fall in love with the most ridiculous creature that she sees. While he is planning this with his fairy, Puck, Oberon overhears an argument between Demetrius and Helena. Helena, deeply in love with Demetrius, is scorned and left abandoned in the wood by the undeserving young man. Oberon, pitying her, gives puck the potion and asks him to put it on the eyes of an Athenian youth when he sees him in close sight of an Athenian girl. Puck, after making one of the players, Bottom, the first thing that Titania sees for her to fall in love with, (and putting an ass? head on him to make him even more ridiculous) finds the wrong couple and puts the potion onto Lysander?s eyes rather than Demetrius?. Soon Helena encounters Lysander and he tells her she is the most beautiful creature ever. To make good, Puck puts the potion onto Demetrius? eyes as well and both now find Helena the most lovely of women. When Hermia encounters their behavior, she decides Helena is in the plot and all the Athenian young people fight with one another, causing more confusion. Oberon decides it is time to put all right. So he makes the right love for the right pair of lovers, and frees both Titania of her love potion and Bottom of his ass? head. The play ends with the performance before Theseus and all ends well.
