The Duchess Of Malfi
(John Webster)
John Webster?s ?Duchess of Malfi??a tale of incest, jealousy, madness, and murder?could be written for a Tarentino film. The Jacobean Tragedy, The Duchess of Malfi portrays the result of a young widow's refusal to obey her brothers' command never to remarry. After secretly marrying Antonio, and having several children together, the Duchess is unfortunately found out by her brothers. The Duchess? natural revolt leaves her at the mercy of her corrupt and imbalanced brothers. The brothers seek revenge and lead to a tragically bloody death and the ruin of all characters in the play. The Tragedy is a quick tale of love, obsession, madness and voyeurism. Ferdinand, one of the Duchess? brothers, is often shown as a weak, imbalanced character susceptible to the corrupting influence of his brother, The Cardinal. Ferdinand is a tragic villain driven mad by his unbalanced and unnatural obsession for his sister. The Duchess is a strong woman who simply doesn?t see that what she is doing is so wrong. The introductory scene between The Duchess and Antonio shows a true love between these two characters. The tender family unit we see develop between these two characters, creates a depth and anchoring to this tragedy that is necessary for the arch of the play. The sincere regard found in these lovers is remarkable in this fast-paced production and juxtaposes their happiness and lightness to the dark and despairing characters of Ferdinand and his corrupt brother. . Traditionally played as the overall mastermind of the play, the Cardinal is the brain behind his brother?s passion. A greedy, calculating villain, The Cardinal is the instrument behind the tragedy and is only out to keep the Duchess? money in the family. He uses his brother?s unnatural love for the Duchess to manipulate him into agreeing to not let the Duchess marry so they can keep control of her estates and fortune. The is engaging and a joy to watch. The uncompromising presentation of the torture and murder of The Duchess, created a disturbingly realistic presentation of death in the tragedy. ?The Duchess of Malfi? is an excellent example of how accessible, and tragically apt to today?s violent society, Jacobean drama remains.
