As You Like It
(William Shakespeare)
The wicked younger brother, Frederick, has seized the throne from his older brother, the Duke and forced him into exile in the forest of Arden. The Duke?s daughter, Rosilind has been raised by her uncle and is the best of friends with her cousin, Celia. Another dispossessed youth, Orlando, secretly in love with Rosalind, has been cheated of his own inheritance by his brother Oliver. Unfortunately, Orlando fights with the Duke?s wrestler and also has to flee to the forest to escape the wrath of the new Duke. Because of these events, and now afraid of having his niece at court, the new Duke Frederick banishes his niece Rosalind. Upset with these events, Celia comforts Rosalind by vowing to go with her wherever she leads. Celia, a smart and forthright young lady, declares that they should disguise themselves, Rosalind, the taller and leaner of the two, can pretend to be her brother and they can enter the forest as peasants as opposed to two young ladies who might be in danger traveling without male accompaniment. So off they go into the forest with the Duke?s jester, Touchstone to find Rosalind?s father. In the forest, Orlando has joined the Duke?s company. Lovelorn for Rosalind, he goes about the forest pinning versus to her. Celia finds this all terribly amusing, and tells Rosalind of his lovelorn verses. Rosalind, pretending to be the youth, Ganymede, desides to test Orlando?s affection and instructs him on how to woo his beloved. Oliver, Orlando?s brother, has gone into the forest in pursuit of him. However, poor Oliver has gotten lost in the forest and is attacked by a lion. At the last minute, Orlando rescues his brother and the two make up their differences. Orlando now having regained his lost inheritance, more than ever wishes to marry Rosalind. Rosalind, while teasing Orlando with her disguise, also finds herself the object of the affection of a misguided, selfish young shepherdess, Phoebe. Phoebe despises the shepherd who loves her and becomes infatuated with the bold speaking Ganymede. Soon, Rosalind is able to reconcile the lovers and realizes it is time to put her disguise behind her. After revealing her true identity to Orlando the two are united. At the same time, Orlando?s brother Oliver has become infatuated with Celia and the brothers decide to have a double wedding. With Touchstone also united to a fair shepherdess all could not be happier, especially when the news comes that Frederick has left for a monastery and the rightful Duke can reassume his thrown. The play is a brilliant example of mistaken identity, romantic comedy, and wit that only Shakespeare can achieve with such art.
