?Ar?n?t I a woman?
By: Sojourner Truth

Slavery was a genre that was prevalent during the late 1750s, because it was what many people were for and against owning human beings. Sojourner Truth?s speech, ?Ar?n?t a Woman,? touched the hearts of many sexist men. Ms. Truth believed that every woman should have the same rights as their husbands and as society as a whole. She believed that women should be given a chance to make up for what the biblical; ?Eve? had done to bring sin upon man. Sojourner Truth also, wanted the world to know that she was both physically, and mentally strong as a man. In addition, her strength was something shared by other women. Maybe not physically, but mentally. Ms. Truth affirmed her beliefs both spiritually and intellectually by taking a stand on establishing rights for women. Sojourner Truth?s speech depicted her world as an unequal place that treated women like second-class citizens with limited rights. She lived through slavery through sheer determination to be free, and she helped other slaves obtain the same freedom that she possessed. Sojourner Truth never learned how to read nor write, because it was forbidden to do so where she was enslaved. However, instead she enlisted the assistance of a white woman who helped her produce a masterpiece that would inspire people of color for generations to come. The way she uses passages from the bible to reiterate her points about forgiveness, and tolerance of the female gender. All the experiences from slavery inspired ?Sojourner Truth? to relay her story. She wanted the ?truth? to be told. Sojourner Truth wanted to be remembered for being an activist, and not just for being a legend. Her life story made her immortal, and heroic in her own right. Ms. Truth did not risk her life to be admired. She would have done anything to free her people. Sojourner Truth just wanted everyone to be treated equal. Ms. Truth was not educated in the classroom, but by the life she led.
