Deliverance

Four friends undertake a canoeing adventure on a river in the wilds of northern Georgia shortly before the area is to be flooded. The powers that be had determined that the resulting new lake would be more suitable for development. Lewis, an avid bow hunter and sportsman, was the natural leader of the group and the trip was his idea. The men?s spirits were high as they headed toward the river but trouble awaited as they were basically unprepared for the severity of the river and remained ignorant to the attitudes of the locals toward outsiders, especially now that they were to be deprived of their homes and land. The classic man-against-nature scenario as well as man-against-man, are the two prevalent themes here. Dickey?s writing is fast paced and the reader finds himself swept up in the action. The tension rises as the men face great danger while attempting to ride through some particularly violent white water. Realization that they are not in control of the situation begins to sink in when a member of the group is killed and the tone turns very dark when another is forcibly sodomized at shotgun point by two of the local hillbillys. Lewis saves the day by killing the offenders with two well-placed arrows. The fact that the author was an avid bow hunter is an interesting note. This book works well on many levels and I highly recommend it.
James Dickey was born in 1923 in Atlanta ,Georgia. He was a star athlete and a lifelong sportsman. More of a poet than a writer of fiction, he won the Buckdancer?s Choice award in 1965 for his fourth collection of verse. Dickey served in the military and many of his works reflect this theme. His life work consists of thirty collections of poems and three novels. He died on January 19, 1997.
