In the city of Oz and surrounding areas, Animals exists. Animals differ from animals because they are sentient beings. This means they are capable of talking and rational thought just as people. However, a social movement originating in the city of Oz by the Emperor leads to the erosion of Animal rights, barring them from studying at colleges, placing them on farms with animals, making it illegal for them to talk, as well as erasing all laws granted to them as citizens.
Meanwhile, a fanatical religious leader and his slutty wife interpret the birth of their ugly green child as an evil omen. Years later, the birth of their beautiful yet deformed second child brings further grief as she has no arms.
Elphaba, the ugly green child, grows up and attends college. Through a series of inauspicious events, she becomes the roommate of a socialite wannabe named Galinda. Initially, the ugly and crude Elphaba often embarrasses the proper and beautiful Galinda. However, they endure many delightfully bizarre adventures throughout college and become best friends.
When Dr. Dillamond, a professor who happens to be a Goat, is murdered, Elphaba?s interests and political activism in the social concerns of Animals leads her to Emerald city to confront the Emperor. After the Emperor rejects her concerns, Elphaba goes into hiding as a terrorist against the government. Meanwhile, Galinda changes her name to Glinda and becomes a powerful sorceress. Since Elphaba is in line for the powerful position of Eminent Throp, her absence leaves Nessarose, her deformed sister as ruler of the East.
As events unfold among these three powerful women, family secrets, conspiracies, and scandal unravel. In the end, you will feel differently about Dorothy?s nemesis and her story will leave unsure of what it means to be Evil.
