However, Anne Rice?s books had been gathering a cult-like fan base well before the opening of the hit movie. The Witching Hour by Anne Rice embodies all of the characteristics that make her books so fantastic.
This story about the Mayfair witches takes a topic that has become very usual and overplayed and freshens it up with new detail and a rejection of the familiar stereotypical witches. In fact, these witches are people first. The main character that had no knowledge of her past and the world that was about to open to her, is skeptical young woman named Rowan. Rowan falls in love with a man named Michael who is also unaware of his involvement in the overall picture until the story unfolds.
The picture that Anne Rice paints of the past is as amazing as her description of New Orleans. In fact, Anne Rice holds the ability to paint clear pictures of New Orleans in the readers? minds. You are visiting New Orleans when you read one of her books including The Witching Hour. In fact, this is the same reason Interview with a Vampire did so well as a movie. It is my opinion that The Witching Hour would make a great movie as well.
The spiritual nature of the book and the sexual situations can make this book offensive to conservative readers. The sexuality in The Witching Hour has a different feel than that which society is used to. It is as if there are no genders or relationships only beauty and love. This together with the witchcraft can easily put this book on a Christians boycott list. However, for those with an open mind and a hunger for something that is different, The Witching Hour is perfect. You will find yourself running to the store after you finish to buy the other books in the series.
