How To Write A Damn Good Novel
(James N. Frey)

James N. Frey, author of several novels, has put together a wonderful resource for writers, particularly those who are writing their first novel. The book consists of a mere 172 pages and is chock-full of good information.
You'll find how to create memorable characters by building them through their unique characteristics. Once your characters are created, you'll be instructed on how to bring that character into your story in a way that will capture your reader and make him hungry for more.
Viewpoint is important in writing a novel. Frey will show you the different points of view to choose from and give you the pros and cons of each one. He also writes about the importance of good dialogue and shares tips for a successful banter between your characters. And let's not forget conflict. Conflict, according to Frey, creates a good story and keeps it moving along.
While reading How to Write a Damn Good Novel, you'll find that the key is to make your plot dramatic. Frey will take you step by step and show you how to accomplish that. He shows you how to shape and develop a scene to keep your reader interested and turning the pages. He also discusses what to do when you get stuck with writer's block.
I've found the book to be helpful as a reference in my own writing, and I keep it by my desk for a quick reference. It's also good to re-read from time to time to refresh yourself on the important points of writing good fiction. Basically, Frey, a professor at the Univeristy of California at Berkeley, has written a 'how-to' book in a fresh and interesting approach. This is not only a good resource for writers, it's one that is interesting to read. This is one book you won't be able to put down before you read it from cover to cover.
