Unidentified Human Remains And The True Nature Of Love
(Brad Fraser)
Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love takes place in the Canadian city of Edmonton in 1989.The play follows the story of seven lonely people and their search for love and meaning in the jaded cynical world of the late 1980s. As the characters try to accept their sexuality and find worthwhile relationships, their lives are affected by a serial killer who stalks the city. When the identity of the killer is revealed, the characters realize that he is no more lost or confused than they are. Unidentified Human Remains documents the ?motion sickness of urban life? as it jumps from scene to scene, uncovering the characters? uncertainty with themselves and each other. The main character, David, a former child star and now waiter, seeks intimacy in brief sexual encounters with strangers. The 29 year old David begins a relationship with a 17 year old boy, Kane, as a substitute for the man he can never have, his ?straight? friend Bernie. Candy, David?s roommate and former lover, also appears confused and desperate in her need for love. As Candy vacillates between her gym lesbian love affair with Jerry, and her relationship with the bartender Robert, David and Bernie struggle with a more desperate form of love. The characters troubles are all observed from the sidelines by David?s clairvoyant friend, and S&M prostitute, Benita. The characters? hollow lives are mirrored with that of the serial killer in their midst; the killer?s graphic violence echoes throughout the play. The scenes jump from one to the next and present an MTV-generation culture deeply cynical and distrustful of love or emotion due to excessive behavior. Deception, confusion, and lies permeate the dialogue while Benita tells urban legends to the audience, encapsulating the paranoia of a city caught in the shadow of a serial killer. A jazzy, uncompromising story filled with violence, nudity, and strong language, the play is witness to the paranoia and confusion of a generation coming to terms with the Aids crisis. The characters articulate their feeling of unease throughout the play; as David states, ?I?ve never known anyone born after 1960 who wasn?t incomplete somehow.? Fraser desired to create characters that were caught in the emotional turmoil that Fraser found from his own experience and that of those around him. By making the characters speak the language of people he knew, and articulate the confusion that he felt, Fraser hoped to draw a different type of audience to the stage. Playwright and Screenwriter, Brad Fraser has won awards for his work since his early years in Edmonton, Canada. Fraser?s plays are known for their explicit language and sexual activity, as well as their controversial view of homosexuality. Fraser has received the prestigious Chalmers Award (Unidentified?,1990, and Poor Super Man, 1994) and was nominated for Governor General?s Award (Poor Super Man, 1996). Unidentified Human Remains? was adapted into a film in 1994, by Denis Arcand. Fraser is also a co-producer and writer of the Showtime series Queer as Folk, and hosts his own talk show, Jawbreaker.
