Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
An entry into the woman's world where young girls perpetually look for balls and their mothers ubiquitously hunt for eligible bachelors. The world construed of mischiefs, stratagems and phallic envy which heightens the romantic tensions and eventually melt into matrimonial rivets . But what makes PRIDE AND PREJUDICE immensely readable is its readability.Austen's masterpiece reveals not just a profile view of ninteenth century female cosmos with all its trivial preoccupations but also a genuine consciousness of the lack of subjective space on the part of the author .The plot being centered around marriages makes the novel quite akin to Shakespearian romantic comedy. The male characters are in most cases passive ;the female characters carry the momentum through stratagems. The pairing of the characters are based upon dramatic selection which slightly hampers the fictional reality although it doesnot impairs its appeal.
The characterization reveals a sense of beauty though a didactic purpose is easily recognized .If Jane reveals the virtue of modesty then Bingley is tolerence , while Elizabeth is pride then Darcy is prejudice, similarly Collins is insolence and Wickham evil. The main theme of the novel is the maturity of Elizabeth and Darcy. Their maturity is acchieved through their acceptence of each other by effacing both pride and prejudice.the novel is beautiful for Elizabeth Austen's brainchild who reveals a poise between sense, self respect and intelligence.Elizabeth's verbal repartee with Darcy is tenuous and joyfull.Itcan be interprated as post-victorian woman's discourse against male possessiveness. Her treatment of Wickham for eloping with her sister reveals a controle on passion which is also a hint of occupying the male space and moulding it with a female idiom.Infact the reader reads the novel for Eliza.
