Permaculture; A Begiiner's Guide
(Graham Burnett)
Whenever people ask me what I do and I reply that I am a permaculture designer, they almost invariably ask me; What is permaculture? "Permaculture: A Beginner's Guide" is an ideal place to begin understanding what permaculture has to offer. The term permaculture was coined by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the mid-1970s, by combining two words, permanent and agriculture. Today many permaculturalists believe that permaculture can also stand for permanent culture. Together, Holmgren and Mollison created a design system that provided people with a method to respond to the serious environmental, political and social challenges that face us all. Looking to be part of the solution not the problem. Need an easy entrance point to make personal and/or community changes? Permaculture: A Beginner's Guide is just that, a step by step guide for people who are new to permaculture. The booklet has numerous illustrations that not only enhance the text but also enable the reader to develop a clearer understanding of the possibilities that this innovative design system has to offer. The use of tables such as Some Useful Weeds and Year Round Food from Your Garden provide the reader withhandy reference tools that they can use as they develop their own design. In fact, the booklet is written in a light hearted but highly informed manner which makes it a pleasure to read and to learn as you do. The further reading section provides the reader with, a non-comprehensive and biased selection, of reading material. In this case, that is exactly what you need. If you want to know more this section gives you months of excellent reading opportunities. If you are serious about improving your self reliance while living within a community and if you are truly worried about what we are doing to Mother Earth, then Permaculture: A Beginner's Guide is an excellent investment, in your and your community's future.
