Sticking Up For The Little Guy
(Christopher Kendalls)
A new trend in websites may be on the horizon. I ran across an interesting website devoted to the cause of assisting employees of restaurants who need to air grievances about employers. Their stance is that while the food industry makes billions from employees who aren't paid much many restaurant employers are "abusive, sexist, mean, sleazy and crooked". The name of the website is Shameless Restaurants.com, and they provide links to other sites to air grievances at. But it doesn't stop there; they provide links to resume services to help disgruntled employees find a new job as well as links to lawyers to help them with their case against the establishment. No site is complete without a forum or message board for visitors to communicate with other and Shameless Restaurants.com provides this in the way of focusing on three cities in particular, New York (which probably has more restaurants per capita than any other town), San Francisco, Los Angeles, and all other cities. Keep in mind that you have to accept a disclaimer that they do not represent the statements of the visitors in anyway and they will indeed remove statements that come across as objectionable. Also, owners themselves can rest knowing that the site is not going to pass on information through this medium, which is knowingly false. While I like the idea of a website that is working on behalf of underpaid workers, this site seems to tread the line between serving the interests of employers and employees, as it is more about initiating the conversation than it is about dictating solutions. Perhaps for the best as this absolves the owners of this particular site of bias. The site started in New York back in June of 2004 and had experienced "legal and technical" issues (think objectionable content), and is now back in business, albeit clearer posting policies.
