Genesis
(The Bible)
Genesis is one of the most important books in the bible, you can say that it defines the Bible and is singularly the most relevant book in the Jewish Pentateuch. Moses is believed to have written the book, though many other scholars argue that there were other authors associated with it. The reason genesis is regarded as the root of Christian and Jewish belief is that it starts off on a very peculiar theme, I use the word peculiar because of the immediate consequences the book had on the Semitic landscape so may centuries ago. Genesis starts off by saying that god created the world in 6 days and rested on the seven, in that sentence and the following sentences that follow the definition of God as a singular entity was made i.e. a monotheistic world view was professed for the first time in the history of the world; it was a definitive break and would be felt down he millennia. The book compresses and spans centuries in its scope, starting with the creation, going on to destruction of the word(the flood), from Noah(the sole survivor of the deluge) to Abraham, a patriarch of the Israelites and the three great monotheistic religions of today. The Genesis reads like history reduced to a few pages, some of the passages may confuse the modern cynical reader, and it was intended to be history, albeit history as the Israelites saw it that is a history of their people and their unique creed or understanding with Jehovah. It also recounts the journey of Abram(or Abraham; a name given later by God to seal the promises made to Abram) from Ur, a town that flourished on the fertile alluvial of the Euphrates near the Persian gulf to Haran in modern turkey and on to Canaan; the promised land, the book is chiefly about this patriarch Abram or Abraham, his finding of the truth about god-the truth that God is one entity-his search for that God-a search that takes him through the tortured landscape of the middle east through Turkey, Syria and finally Canaan-Abrams unshakable faith in his new found God-he waits for a heir believing he would be blessed with a child even in old age. Abraham is painted as a very human figure, there are no fantastic miracles in this book if you leave out the creation story (a myth very common in Mesopotamia at that time and indeed in most ancient religions) and the flooding (another common myth in Sumerian, Babylonian, even Hindu religions) most of the characters are very human and have very human foibles aside from a great faith that some have. The chief Players in this book are 1.Adam and Eve: First man and first woman, they live with god in an earthly paradise called Eden, Unfortunately they taste of the fruit of good and evil and this leads to the fall of man from gods grace-the concept of original sin comes in here! 2.Cain and Abel: Eve's sons are meant to populate the world and dwell in it, unfortunately because sin has entered through temptation, the first murder ensues with God playing lead investigator, there is no penalty, god judges Cain with his first act of forgiveness by absolving him of putting on him a mark i.e. the mark of Cain. 3. Noah: As man kind explodes onto the earth, moral standards fall, evil reigns. God decides to end it all, to quash his little planet for it grieves him that man is capable only of endless wickedness, he decides on a Flood but since Noah is a righteous man, he saves him, his family and pair of every creature on the earth to perpetuate life after the flood. They are all saved as they float on an ark or huge ship, at the end of which all life that is not on the ship is drowned. Noah makes a new covenant with god. God promises never to wreak such havoc on the earth again and as a goodwill gesture throws in the Rainbow, which will henceforth seal this promise of no more destruction. 4.Abraham: man kind progresses again God comes down and chooses a new people among all of Noah?s descendents; a new people to make a new covenant with, he does this with Terah( Abrams father and with Abraham himself, who is blessed by god with a son Isaac the father of all Israelites. 5. Joseph: another man of God, with human frailties and an unshakable faith in God. Genesis is one of the most pivotal books in the bible, if you read the rest of the bible you will see that a lot of books keep pointing back, i.e. referring to genesis and the events within as a benchmark for many acts and moral decisions. Genesis is one of the oldest books in the world, yet the impact it has made in human history is immense. Faith in god is emphasized throughout the book and this belief is justified in the end when God leads the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt to the promised land of Canaan. The most important concepts given voiced in genesis are: a monotheistic worldview, original sin, the fall of man and the faith necessary for redemption. Faith becomes a prerequisite for dealing with God. The greatest book in the old testament, a vast sweeping epic of a book.
