The Good Earth
(Pearl S. Buck)

Publicidade
Pearl S. Buck invites the reader to experience Chinese society during a time when young girls feet are bound and women are nothing more than slaves. The reader will witness the struggle of living off the land.

The elements of water, fire, earth and passion converge. A tapestry, the heart of humanity, exposes the rawness of what it is to be flesh, bone, blood and desire.
Secret passages intertwine connecting individuals? a cultural affair from pages past.
Within the pages the sinew of souls? are stretched, molded, built up and broken.

(The water) Water, the life force, without it one withers and dies, however, when clouds become heavy the earth is covered and those poor souls rich and poor can do noting but watch and flee. So, there must be gods to fear to cover to pleasure with the smoke of incense rising.

(The fire) With fire too much too little both are not good. There must be balance otherwise seeds will shrivel and die or rot in vain. Peoples, indeed all living things, are dependent upon fire to be proportioned enough but not too much.

(The earth) And what of the earth, the dirt beneath the feet upon which living things wheat and rye and bean and all kinds of sprout rises to quench hunger?s want? Does not all men desire sweat of brow and dirt under the nails to see the fruit of their labor spring forth unto harvest? And what of man yet to be born of earth and water and fire to live and die and to sleep into the coolness of the soil planted rising things?

(The passion) There has always been water, fire, earth; but passion, the catalyst unto which all things living passion must exist. Without passion there would be no working of the soil, no planting, no fruiting of the seed, and there would not be kindled desire within the heart desire and want.

Pearl S. Buck has passion; through her, it flows without restraint. A writer, musician, artist, she brushes life upon the page springing forth unto the light the struggle to live upon the good earth.

And of man:

Dust

Eyes view the world
Portals for the heart
Soul strains
Secret of angels in clay pot
Vessel cracks and drains
