The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy was originally a radio-broadcasted
series that became an instant classic. Douglas Adams' interstellar
adventure follows the life of a 30
something Brit named Arthur Dent as the universe is revealed to him in
it's true form. Through the help of his friend Ford Prefect, a native
to Betelgeuse who had been living under the guise of being an out of
work actor while being
stranded on Earth for 15 years, Arthur leaves Earth before it is
destroyed and learns how to hitchhike across the galaxy. Prefect is a
roving writer for the infamous Hitchhikers Guide the Galaxy, a
comically blunt resource to all who wish to travel the universe. During
his adventures (which continue in the books that follow: Life the
Universe and Everything, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, So
Long and Thanks for All the Fish, and Mostly Harmless), Arthur
befriends a depressed robot, a two-headed egomaniac, a spaceship with a
mind of its own, and many other colorful characters.
He learns that not only is the Earth not the only place where life
abounds in the Universe, but that it has also been shunned by everyone
else for being unfashionable.
The style of Douglas Adams is light and amusing, while imbedded with
ingenious similes and textual pranks. He delivers his impeccable
British wit with the humor and grace of a Dave Barry column. Yet,
nothing is lost in the plot! The action is exciting, the descriptions
are engaging, and the social commentary (while nonpartisan) is a
riot.
Besides the Hitchhikers Series, he has also written several other
books, such as Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, The Long Dark
Tea Time of the Soul, Starship Titanic (co-written with Terry Jones of
Monty Python), and The Salmon of Doubt (published posthumously).
This is a MUST READ. I have owned the book for 11 years and have read it at least twice each year.
I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Terry Pratchett, Dave Barry, Monty Python, Red Dwarf, Mr. Bean, Star Wars, or Star Trek.
