Madame Bovary
(Gusrave Flaubert)

Publicidade
The story of Madame Bovary is one full of lust, pride, greed, and most importantly love. The novel starts out with a young Monsieur Bovary. Charles, as he is called throughout the text is an ackward, some what goofy young man who is slow to learning; however, tries his hardest to become a young doctor. After two marriges, he finds himself betrothed to Emma. A beautiful woman, Emma has just left a convent and disregards religion and many of the constraints of society. However, the romantic ideas she has built up in her mind concerning love and romance(she desires a fairytale life), cause her to marry Charles in hopes of acheiving that great life of love. Unfortunately, the morn after her wedding night, the present Emma Bovary is thouroughly disappointed and disgusted with her husband. She tries to be a good wife but eventually starts a liason with the clerk of a local advocate in their town, Yonville. Emma's desire to thrive and be in high society causes her as well as her husband to move from the boring life of Yonville (pronounced yawn-ville), into the bustling social ranks of Paris. Emma gives birth to a child but does not discontinue her  infidelities against Charles. Eventually, Emma's frivolous behaviours catch up with her, and she destroys her family financially after a supposedly family friend, launders their money away with Emma's unknowing consent.  Emma (Madame Bovary), develops a deathly fever and soon there after, she dies. Charles and their child move back to Yonville. However, he stumbles upon Emma's love letters to her former lover and heartbroken, he commits suicide. The child, is sent to live with various family members but eventually, she is sent to work at a textile factory as an orphan.  This story of social class marked the soon to come end of the romantic period and introduces the thoughts and ideas of realism. The intricate detailing of Emma's sexuality caused the book to be banned and Flaubert was put on trial for messages promoting sexuality and propogandist behaviour against the church, all of which he was found not guilty of.
