The Metamorphasis
(franz kafka)
The Metamorphasis is an intriguing short novel by Franz Kafka, a not entirely well known author who writes interesting and puzzling books. This particular story starts out as the main character, formally a normal man, wakes up one day to find himself turned into a bug in his sleep. Apparently a most hideous sort of creature, seemingly beetle like in his appearance, the man is confused, and the story details his changes from man to bug. He first discovers himself to be a bug when he tries to roll out of bed for work in the morning, and finds that he is very trapped, lying on his back, unable to move. After much exertion and mental confusion, and knocking and pestering from his family, the man is able to roll himself off the bed and onto the floor. His torment only begins here, however, as he has to come to terms with the fact that he is now a bug. He refuses for quite some time to open his door to his family or his boss. Finally his family comes into the room, and are, needless to say, quite shocked at what they find. He is soon shut back up in his room, his family extremely confused, and he begins to try to figure out how to live as a bug. His sister brings him food daily, after experimenting to find stuff that he would eat (he would not eat good fresh food, but rather only garbage and leftovers that were to be thrown out...much to his own puzzlement). He soon finds that he is most comfortable climbing the walls and crawling along the ceiling of his room, and he hides under the couch whenever anyone enters his room. He finds that the underside of the couch, in its darkness, is now quite comforting to him, despite his inability to figure out why it is so. As he was the breadwinner in his family, his family soon has to go out and get jobs in order to survive. This puts quite the strain on them, as they are older and not used to working. The family also takes in boarders in order to get more money. This works out quite fine until one night when his sister is playing beautiful music, and it draws him out of his room and the boarders see him. They are quite shocked and outraged, and leave, demanding all of their money back. This only further serves to heighten the already tense situation between him and his family. Soon things come to a head, and, in the end, his father throws an apple at him, which digs itself into his shell on his back, causing him serious and permanent damage, that eventually leads to his death. The story concludes with him dying, and his family going back to their normal lives.
